'Roaring Girls'

'Roaring Girls' is a sculpture series that considers the involvement of women in warfare, and its profound emotional impact. A series of guns and shells, based on real weapons, but stitched from scarlet textiles, suggest ambivalence about the involvement of women in frontline fighting. A full sized forged steel and felt propeller, based on a French monoplane, has a peculiarly feminine form. A red bridal veil refers to the surplus of women resulting from the enormous losses in the First World War, and a medal series celebrates female non-combatants.
