Destiny Obscure

‘Destiny Obscure’ is a flowing veil form, constructed from found embroidery, bolted to a hand forged steel skull cap. The interior of this form is inky black, suggesting a void or absence. The work utilises opposing materials; the industrial nature of dark forged steel, contrasted with hand embroidery on white linen, with its domestic associations. This work implies apparently disparate references; the Islamic veil, the traditions of English church embroidery, papal ecclesiastical vestments, and the symbolism of the bridal veil. The title is taken from Thomas Gray’s ‘Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard’, both an evocation of Englishness, and a paean to the forgotten poor.
